Global Learning Courses
Over the past two years, I have been able to partake in some of the most intriguing courses all revolving on global perspective, history, and more!
AMH 2042- Modern American Civilization
During my time in this Modern American Civilization course, I was able to discover and learn more about the development of the United States from the early Republic to the present. In this short six-week course, I had the weekly task of reading several chapters and had 4 major reports based on a topic of my choosing based off on the readings that were made during the week. I decided to go with Immigration, and throughout this course I have been able to see how immigration has revolutionized in some ways and is still struggling in others. As a daughter of immigrants, this course helped me expand my understand from another perspective the struggles that an immigrant would go through in order to be a part of this great country. Many struggled while being here as many refuse to be accepting, as they thought immigrants were here to take their jobs. I learned about diverse international, domestic political, ideological, and cultural forces that have come to shape American politics and societies. Below, is one of my favorite essays written to date. It was written with passion, but also how some Americans need to expand their perspectives on immigration, which is highly applicable even now.
HFT 3503- Hospitality Marketing Management
Last Spring, I took Hospitality Marketing Management, this course dove into a profound examination of marketing principles, theories and concepts and the use of management principles and techniques of analysis, planning, implementation and control to maximize marketing effectiveness in hospitality organizations. I had a final project where I had to choose a advertisement made by a global hospitality company and analyze the target market, the purpose, objective, message content, and execution to name a few. Attached below is the document elaborating on the advertisement I chose from Disney Parks, Meeting Cinderella. Throughout the class I was really able to break down the advertisement and try and identify the key points that The Walt Disney Company tries to attain each time they release any advertisement for any of their parks globally. It is through emotional attachment to storytelling that Disney is able to reel us in and bring those stories and magical moments to life each and every day.
AMH 2020- American History Introductory Survey Since 1877
Throughout my AMH 2020 class I was able to explore topics as industrialization, political reform, experiences in war, social conflict, and changing conceptions of the meaning of democracy. We had to choose one research topic and extensively research the evolution of the topic until present day, I would look through old newspapers through the FIU library databases to papers that dated back to 1938. The topic I decided on was “How Should the U.S. Support Returning Veterans?” Some veterans financially struggle when they come back and yet there are also people who have not served in combat surviving well off of taxpayer dollars making fraudulent claims to qualify for food stamps or money for clothes etc. Personally, I feel like the nation provide enough support to Veterans when they return home given their sacrifices. This was a topic I still feel quite passionate about and it was interesting to see the evolution of how we give back to those who serve. Below is my final paper on this topic!
HFT 3073- Corporate Responsibility within the Hospitality Industry
Corporate Responsibility within the Hospitality Industry is a course all about giving back and how it is vital for industry leaders to ensure we are putting our best foot forward in reducing our carbon footprints while still ensuring the same experience and service to our guests. In this course, we had to choose a global company in which we would research their Corporate Responsibility efforts and analyze how we could either improve their goals and plans for the next fiscal year or provide extensive reasoning as to why what the company is doing is prioritizing our planet the best ways possible. One of the things that I learned through this course is how educating people on how they can make an impact on their carbon footprint is pretty easy once they understand the complexity of Climate Change, Greenhouse emissions and how they are negatively affecting us in a global perspective. Many Fortune 500 companies have seen how immense their cooperation needs to be in orders to reduce the damage we are creating, as a result, many have come up with innovative ways to create less waste, recycling more, and even utilize more solar panels within their properties as a main source of energy!
HFT 3603- Hospitality Industry Law
Objection! This past Spring I took Hospitality Industry Law. This course allowed me to explore various laws that we have domestically here in the United States and how laws can also vary on cruise lines and in other parts of the world! One of the things about law is that it can definitely get tricky at times, but through the constant studying of laws the percentage of a winning case in court increases! I was introduced to the laws, rules and regulations applicable to the hospitality industry in a global perspective. Some of the topics that were discussed throughout the duration of this course included: Antidiscrimination, Civil Rights, ADA, Cruise Ships, Food Liability, Business Owner’s Rights, and Employment to name a few. At the end of the semester, I was able to be part of the jury for a mock trial that was presented to the class by my own classmates, below is my decision for that trial, the interesting part was that it is still an ongoing trial, however Professor John Thomas agreed with most of the students decision including mine!
